A day out of the city, and back for your flight
This is the departure for a connection long enough to leave the city behind. Four to eight hours, a private vehicle, and a driver-guide who will point the day at whatever you tell him you came for — the windmills of the Zaanstreek, a clog workshop, a cheese farm, the harbour at Volendam, the old island village of Marken, and in season the tulip gardens at Keukenhof.
The cheese tasting is inside the fare, which is unusual: almost nothing else on this list includes anything you can consume. So is the parking, and so is the water. What is not included is lunch — there is time to stop for it on the route — or Keukenhof's own admission, which you buy at the gate.
It carries more reviews than any other departure here, which is worth knowing for a different reason than you might expect: 59 of them is enough evidence to see what the product really is, including the parts that will not suit everyone. It is a car and a driver who talks, out in the countryside, for most of a day.
How the hours divide
- Pickup, about fifteen minutes before the start. From the airport, a hotel, or the cruise terminal.
- Roughly 40 minutes north. Out of the polder and into the Zaanstreek.
- About two hours at the windmills. Working mills on the river, the clog workshop, the cheese farm and the tasting.
- An hour at Volendam, if the day has room: the harbour, the boats and the eel smokers.
- Two hours at Marken or Keukenhof, seasonally — the former island village, or the gardens in spring.
- A drive through the centre on the way back, if you have not seen it.
- Drop-off at the terminal, timed to your departure.
Not all of that fits in four hours. The listing offers four, five and eight-hour grades, and the honest way to read the stop list is as a menu rather than a route: you pick, and the driver plans around the clock.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book this if
You have eight hours or more and you have either seen Amsterdam already or would rather see the country than the city. You are travelling with children, who take to a windmill and a clog workshop far better than to a canal-house facade. Or you want Spanish rather than English, which only two departures here offer.
Book something else if
Your connection is six hours or less. The drive north has to fit your margin twice, and on a tight gap it will not. Take the three-hour city loop instead. And if you want the canal ring properly, on foot and from the water, that is the walking tour with a canal cruise.

The cheese tasting being included is the genuinely unusual line there. Keukenhof's admission is not, and it is the one that surprises people in spring — the gardens charge at the gate and the fare does not cover it.
Where you meet the driver
The listing names the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam as a pickup point and adds the airport, hotels and addresses across the city. The operator's own instruction is to meet your driver-guide about fifteen minutes before the tour starts, at your address, hotel or ship. The usual start time is nine in the morning, and they will move it if you ask.
Know before you go
- Lunch is not included. There is time to stop for it on the route, and the driver will suggest somewhere.
- Some mills charge to go inside. Walking through the village is free; the combined museum and mill ticket is €29.50 for an adult.
- Keukenhof admission is separate. Budget for it if you are travelling between late March and mid-May.
- Not wheelchair accessible, though a collapsible wheelchair with removable wheels can be carried.
- Up to seven travellers, with infant seats available on request.
- Confirmation can take up to twelve hours if you book close to the day, so leave a little room rather than booking from the departure lounge.
